Billy Corgan has been teasing a Smashing Pumpkins reunion for months and it looks like it is finally becoming a reality. Corgan posted a black and white photo of himself with former guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin hanging out in Los Angeles recording studio.
Corgan captioned the photo: “Not sure what cross-eyed spy took this photo, but we had a visitor to the studio the other day. So many memories when you put the three of us together. @jamesihaofficial @chamberdrums #WPC.”
After breaking up in 2000, original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin rejoined Smashing Pumpkins revolving door lineup in 2015 for the band's The End Times Tour. Iha joined the band onstage in March 2016, and former bassist D’arcy Wretzky revealed that she had been asked four times to rejoin the band and that she would “consider going back.” The two are now "back in contact" after not speaking for 16 years.
Billy Corgan has expressed his desire to make peace with his former bandmates recently after calling Wretzky “a mean-spirited drug addict” and Iha “a piece of s**t and one of the worst human beings I’ve ever met in my life” in 2015.
Corgan told author Jennifer Weigel in a Q+A panel about wanting to reconcile his relationship with them, saying, “when you’re talking about the natural human instinct to find forgiveness and heal a relationship, I think that never ends. That’s a human thing, it has nothing to do with the band or people creating memories.”
He has teased the reunion on Facebook multiple times, saying "there’s some big stuff happening." Corgan and Chamberlin have revealed the title of the first track they have been working on together called "Route 666." He teased the track with a photo on Instagram with the caption: "His and his acai bowls. @chamberdrums and I are currently working on a song called 'Route 666'. Using my early 70's Iommi-esque Laney amp too. #savage"
We'll just have to wait and see what this once unthinkable reunion produces.
